Kris, it'd be interesting to see if just crows are affected by the blackout or are all birds affected? I'm going to guess that the blackout is caused by some sort of massive energy burst. To us humans it has a weird effect of showing us the future, but to crows (and maybe other small animals) it just drops them dead. Thanks for the comments, everyone!
